The use of a tool or instrument in order to create a positive response to the surrounding tissues via increased blood flow, and an external sensory input.
IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, and it's a type of manual therapy that utilizes specific instruments to locate and treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction. In the sports medicine setting, IASTM is often used to treat injuries such as muscle strains, tendinopathy, and fasciitis. It can also be used to help alleviate chronic pain conditions such as lower back pain and neck pain.
While this technique has been known by several brand names, it is ultimately the use of a tool or instrument in order to create microtrauma to the area, eliciting a positive response to the surrounding tissues via increased blood flow, and an external sensory input. As always, we typically use IASTM in conjunction with other manual therapies and strength and conditioning exercises.
